Pixel Art
Pixel art has been a fun journey ever since I started it in the Summer of 2021. It's taught me a lot about minimalism and how much transferability of skills there is among art mediums. Here is a collection of some of my pixel art creations along with the process I used to make them.
Cross Bones
Cross-Bones is a tyrant among the undead who uses its torch to burn the spirits that disobey it
In Game
Cross-Bones was inspired by the Skeleton Archer in Battle for Wesnoth as a crossbow variant
Outlining
I start my pixel art by colorblocking to give an idea of silhouette. I usually also will detail at least one object to ground my idea to the painting
Detailing
Usually by the time I finish shading the drawing it's changed quite a bit as I play with new ideas or redraw sections of it

Wendigo
A muscular deformed beast, the Wendigo is a hidden weapon of dark magics used to terrorize enemy encampments
In Game
The Wendigo was inspired by the Ghoul in Battle for Wesnoth as a faster glass cannon type unit
Outlining
Before the colorblocking I start my drawings with pencil and paper to more quickly flesh out ideas. When I do move to the computer I start with a large purple brush to place the silhouette before colorblocking it
Detailing
Sometimes a drawing doesn't change much between the outline and detailing, this usually happens when the biggest issues are proportion related

Gaunt
The Gaunt is a being that has lost its soul to the unceasing hunger which drives it forwards endlessly
In Game
The Gaunt was also inspired by the Ghoul in Battle for Wesnoth as an upgrade to the Wendigo
Outlining
When working on units which are upgrades of one another I try to keep the color palette very similar if not the same amongst all upgrades. I like to think of upgrades in games as a fast paced version of evolution so I have them emerge with differences as I detail them
Detailing
When I've finished detailing a drawing for a game I test it in-game immediately allowing me to see further mistakes or additions that can take it a slight step further

Wechuge
An ancient guardian spirit of the swamps, the Wechuge is a revolting monster which spreads trails of acid by sprinkling its flesh over the locale
In Game
The Wechuge was also inspired by the Ghoul in Battle for Wesnoth as an alternative upgrade to the Wendigo's Gaunt upgrade
Outlining
Although rare there are some drawings I make where after detailing I leave it as is. This doesn't mean I see no further way to improve the drawing but rather I don't know how to pull off the improvements I want to make yet

Lemure
A fleshless puddle of souls, Lemures are a parasitic spirit that climbs inside of its host turning them into a Ghoul
In Game
The Lemure was the first Ghoul inspired unit I made and my first pixel art creation
Outlining
Many of my Ghoul based pixel art units are redrawings of older pixel art from when I was still learning the fundamentals. The Lemure stands as the strongest testament to my growth for me in seeing how alive it has become compared to the pile of goop it originally was

Nadine
Nadine is the titular character of my Battle for Wesnoth add-on/mod; Dusk over Alden Cove.

Nadine Variations
Under Ambross' tutelage Nadine can eventually become a necromancer of great power, however her mind is still young and she is easily manipulated
In Game
Nadine's inspiration comes from the footpad, dark sorceress, and necromancer units in Battle for Wesnoth although her first level is her only majorly unique design
Outlining
Nadine was the first human character I had ever drawn excluding the anime characters I drew back in high school. I don't care much for human characters but it was a great learning experience as I designed Nadine and later reworked her proportions greatly
Detailing
Nadine's earlier forms struggled a lot from lack of depth which was rooted from not enough sketches on paper before moving to the computer

Rat-Knight
More vicious and mean than the typical rodent, Rat Knights are known for shanking and taking the purses of their victims
In Game
The Rat-Knight was inspired by the Giant Rat in Battle for Wesnoth as a joke due to how many rat related easter eggs I kept making
Outlining
When colorblocking I make the colors larger than I actually need them to be so that when I add the outline they won't be too small. It also makes it easier to adjust the drawing later on if something is too large since it can be chiseled away, whereas if it's too small I have to redraw it to adjust the size
Detailing
If a character is wearing light cloth/armour I also find it helpful to draw them normally first and then recolor to add on their clothes/armour

Duke of Rats
Some rats are just built different
In Game
The Duke of Rats was inspired by the Giant Rat in Battle for Wesnoth as an upgrade to the Rat Knight
Outlining
I am attempting a new style of outlining starting with a blended outline instead of a pure black outline. The pure black outline helps me see the individual objects making up a mass and work on them one by one but a blended outline makes the form come across clearer earlier in the drawing
Detailing
In between the detailing and finishing of a drawing aside from putting them in context I also flip them as sometimes limbs or heads are pushed too far in one direction without it being obvious

Doyam
The Doyam is a fish like creature that lives in damp caves. This specific Doyam is an adventurer of the underworld.
Outlining
Although it sports the same style and pink cloth as my wesnoth drawings the Doyam is not intended to be in Wesnoth and is a slightly different style. Originally I had designed it as the titular character of an RPG, however it is currently a standalone piece simply for the fun of existing
Detailing
The Doyam is my favorite pixel art piece simply because of all the heart I've poured into it. It's been a long time since the Doyam RPG project was cancelled, yet I keep redrawing the Doyam on a regular basis. I even have half a sketchbook full of random doodles of the Doyam
